CORTLAND – It's opening day for the NYCBL! Your Cortland Crush kick off their 2021 season at home today as they face the Sherrill Silversmiths in an exciting Eastern Division matchup. Arriving in Cortland early last week, the team is excited to get the season officially underway. The past few days have seen the team engaging in community events, working hard at practice, and logging two exhibition games in preparation for tonight’s opener.
Ithaca College pitcher Buzz Shirley has the start today and is ready to get things going on the mound. “It started when I woke up today; just locking in and preparing myself mentally for tonight” said Shirley when asked how he was preparing for his start today. The left handed pitcher who struck out a team-high 46 batters this past season for Ithaca also had this to say about today's game:
“Our main focus is to go out and win a game today. Being the reigning Eastern Division champs from 2019 we want to make a statement and show everyone that we’re the team to beat this season. The boys are hungry and ready to get after it so I think today is going to be an exciting one.”
For fans at the park tonight, there will be numerous events taking place throughout the game. A 50/50 raffle will be held as well as a free gameday raffle with a chance to win some Crush gear for anyone who participates. Also, there will be a base race for youngsters as well as a hole in one contest where one lucky fan that purchased a ticket will have the chance to win $10,000. All home games will include these events to keep things fun at the park all summer.
Be sure to catch the Crush in their home opener at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex tonight at 6:05pm! The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by Cortlandville supervisor Tom Willams. THANKS TOM and GO CRUSH!
